A time of misfortune [Hanjin]

A time of misfortune

The month of April this year brings about not only bad news but the worst news. It foretells a story of woe.

The sad news is that Hanjin, the company that was supposed to build a 400 hectare ship-building facility at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, has withdrawn from the project. Last Saturday, all the Koreans left and brought with them all their equipment loaded on barges and bid goodbye to their mega-project in our province.

And so the 40,000 jobs for welders and carpenters and masons and drivers and crane operators and engineers are all gone.

The reasons for the withdrawal are reportedly complicated and insurmountable. One is that Hanjin allegedly failed to obtain an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). The problem arose when the Philippine company which worked for the documentation of the Hanjin project failed to forewarn Hanjin of the basic requirement of an ECC, of a social impact study, and of the need to relocate present occupants to acceptable sites for human resettlement.

Another problem arose out of the issue as to the supply of electricity from NAPOCOR and STEAG Coal-fired Power Plant. Hanjin wanted to pay only for electricity it actually consumes but NAPOCOR reportedly wanted to peg a minimum consumption rate. The issue involves millions of peso a year in terms of actual electricity payments. With this thorn in the project, Hanjin decided to withdraw.

A third issue that pushed Hanjin off the cliff was the issue of land ownership. Phividec is only allowed to lease lands to companies which are called locators within the industrial estate. Phividec is not allowed to sell lands to any locator-companies. Thus, Hanjin will be forced to rent forever the lands over which they will be investing billions of dollars in equipment, infrastructure and machinery. On the contrary, the Subic Industrial Estate and the Bataan Export Processing Zone are reportedly allowed to sell lands to Hanjin. That is the reason why Hanjin decided to pull out and just expand their Subic and Bataan existing shipping yards.

The other reason for the Hanjin pull-out is the reported demand of the Senate to summon the President and chairman of the board of Hanjin to appear before the said body and justify Hanjin’s failure to obtain an ECC before commencing their projects. A couple of Senators were said to have insisted on the summons which insulted the culture and the reputation of Hanjin.

When pride becomes the issue, Hanjin took the gentleman’s way out of the problem and decided to withdraw.

And the sore loser in this Hanjin debacle are the people of Mindanao who lost the projected 40,000 jobs and skills-training and the side economic benefit that would have resulted from the Hanjin project.

It is a very sad story of how politics amongst the senators, and the myopic insistence of government regulatory agencies like the DENR and EMB to have only gotten into the required ECC after the Hanjin project has started to be implemented, instead of having assisted Hanjin to comply with the ECC requirements, that has resulted into the Hanjin loss.

The efforts of the local governments of the municipalities of Villanueva, Tagoloan, Jasaan and the entire province of Misamis Oriental headed by Governor Oca Moreno, and the congressmen of the province, and Mayor Tinnex Jaraula and Vice-Mayor Dongkoy Emano to convince President Gloria Arroyo to salvage the Hanjin project would hopefully bring fruit and positive results. But after what Hanjin had gone through, and the sad experience of having been harassed to frustration, is a sad lesson that both Hanjin and the Filipino people should learn from.

The loss of 40,000 projected jobs that Hanjin should have provided is not a small matter. And the disappointment that Hanjin also experienced from the Philippine setting is neither a minor one. However, the biggest loser in all these Hanjin debacle is the Philippine society, in general, and the Misamisnons and Kagayanons and Mindanaoans, in particular.

There is only one remedy to avoid this unfortunate situation and, that is, for the President of the Republic to exercise her moral ascendancy, executive fiat, political influence, and charismatic powers to bring back Hanjin into Mindanao and prevent an economic walk-out that could have caused more severe and dismal effects on our economy in the decades to come.

The Hanjin withdrawal is a nightmare. I hope it will remain to be a sad dream of which, when I wake up in the morning, will go away like the morning mist. For, if it becomes reality, the nightmare will become an economic monster of proportions never ever imagined.

And I also hope that the Hanjin debacle will be the last and the people will learn that there is always a price to pay for all the stupidity that we commit upon ourselves.

surf etiquette

Surf Etiquette - How to handle your surfboard and not piss anybody off.

All around the world the rules of surfing are the same. These rules are known as “surf etiquette”. Some breaks (or great surfing locations) have the surf etiquette on signs or plaques displayed prominently before you get in the water.

In this day and age of increasing “rage” with everything, there is even surf rage. Be respectful of the universal surf etiquette code to save yourself many unpleasantries.

No one wants to wear a surfboard in the face. No one wants to wait ages for the perfect wave to have to get off to prevent themselves plowing into someone dropping in or not knowing what they are doing. No one wants to be beaten up in the parking lot for infuriating a local by dropping in (see below for definition) on their wave. No one wants to get their surfboard dinged by some novice who doesn’t know what they are doing. No one wants to go to prison for committing surf rage, either.

The rules have been invented to try and keep everyone safe, and also to make it fairer. Some surfing breaks enforce the rules more than other places. If you are at a new break take a minute to observe the locals.

Right of Way.

The surfer on the wave who is closest to the breaking edge has right of way. This means that the wave is theirs. Unless they fall off their surfboard, or pull out of the wave, they have priority, or right of way. To put it simply, if there is already a surfer on their feet on their surfboard closest to where the wave is breaking, you can’t surf that wave. The wave is already taken.

Dropping In.

Never, ever, drop in on another surfer’s wave. This is considered the most heinous of surfing crimes. If there is someone on the wave already you cannot just hop on the wave in front of them. This is what is known as dropping in. Committing this surfing crime could result in your surfboard being banged up, the other surfer surfing over the top of you, the surfer having to pull off his wave, causing major fury, and more often than not, you having to endure surf rage. If you do not want to be abused physically or verbally do not drop in on another surfer, ever.

When you drop in on another surfer all the other surfers can see you and they will all have a terrible impression of you. There is no excuse, ever.
Getting Back Out.

When you are paddling back out to the break (where the good waves are), you need to keep out of the way of surfers. Other surfers do not want to lose their wave so as to not ride their surfboard over the top of you. You need to paddle behind where they are surfing and not get in their path. You will be paddling through more white water, but everyone has to do it.

Sharing.

Some surf breaks have more aggressive local surfers than others. Locals have a right to surf their own break. Visitors should respect any local customs as well as the universal surfing etiquette. Visitors are entitled to surf the waves as well, but care should be taken to not antagonize the locals. Sharing and respect will result in you being accepted by the locals and having a more pleasant surfing experience.

Control Your Surfboard.

An out of control surfboard can create a lot of damage, both to yourself, other surfers, and their surfboards. When you are paddling out to the break you need to hang on to your board. This is for 2 reasons. Firstly, so as you don’t injure anyone paddling behind you, and secondly, you will get out the back (where the good waves are breaking), quicker if you maintain control of your surfboard. You will only be forgiven for letting go of your surfboard if it looks like you will meet your death being wiped out otherwise.

Only self centered bastards ride a surfboard without a surfboard leash in crowded environments.

Remember, respect in the water goes a long way. Treat the other surfers how you would like to be treated yourself.

In this guide you will learn exactly what type of surfboard is perfect for you. We will help you pick the length, width, thickness, shape, fin setup… I think you get the point. Motorcycle AirBrushing @ Full Throttle, Cagayan de Oro City

THE HISTORY OF AIRBRUSHING

Since World War I, many artists and painters have implemented modern technology into their art form. Airbrushes and the development of their use began its popularity almost literally at the same time in Europe and the United States. These movements were started by both Man Ray (New York City) and Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus School in Germany.

Airbrushes were initially used by Man Ray in New York to develop paintings in the year 1917. However, in 1933 in Europe, the fear of Communism was emerging. Because of this fear, the Bauhaus school was closed down by the Nazis. At this time, most of the leaders in the airbrush movement immigrated to the United States. The New Bauhaus school was eventually started in Chicago; ironically, most often considered the home of the airbrush industry in America.

Since then, the airbrush has been used for a variety of different art forms and projects. From temporary tattooing and commercial art to sunless tanning and cake decorating, airbrush supplies are a fairly large market. Many retailers offer a wide range of kits, compressors, hoses, paints, stencils and tools for your every airbrush need. The popularity of the art movement has taken the consumer industry by storm.

Things i totally appreciate even more when i have had enough to drink:

  • the millions of tiny little bright lights in the dark. does anyone know what i’m talking about?? they’re sooo pretty, floating around. it makes me just want to bawl my eyes out *takes a sip of vodka*
  • having two hands is so great. that way when you’re so drunk that you’re throwing up all over the place, you have two hands to pull your hair back and make sure that those nasty little chunks of whatever you ate that night don’t get stuck in your hair.
  • Bathrooms. The drunkard’s sanctuary. What would we ever do without it?
  • being sober.  need i say more?
